Tubing, PUMP TUBING, for Autoclude Peristaltic Pumps - Products Section

Autoclude peristaltic pumps, following the standards applied by Autoclude, use the highest possible grade of peristaltic pump tubing.

The performance of a peristaltic pump is very often judged upon the durability of the tube used, therefore high quality, correctly sized tube is critical.

The following are the standard tubes used and carried as stock by Autoclude.

TUBE MATERIALS

SiliconeA translucent medical/food grade tubing which is odourless, non-toxic, and has FDA and USP Class VI approvals. It is autoclavable and is used in many applications.
AutopreneFirst choice when long tube life is required. An opaque thermo-plastic rubber with un-matched wear resistance. This tube is derived from Santoprene, a product of Advanced Elastomer Systems. Carrying FDA food grade approval, this material has been further enhanced to meet the requirements and approval standards of USP Class VI criteria for medical bio-compatibility. Tube life expected to be up to 10 times the life of other tubing. Excellent chemical compatibility. Beige colour.
VitonA black, fluoroelastomer with resistance to concentrated acids, solvents, ozone, radiation and temperatures up to 200°C. Viton has excellent chemical compatibility, but has less service life than other tubing. However, there are many applications which demand the use of Viton.
TygonThis tube has excellent chemical resistance, handles virtually any inorganic chemical and is one of the family of non-toxic tubes. Clear finish.
Prothane IIA transparent blue polyester polyurethane tubing which is resistant to ozone, diesel fuel, kerosene, motor oil, mild solvents, aromatic hydrocarbons, petrol and concentrated acid and alkaline solutions.

Autoclude place great emphasis on the wall thickness. A number of the tubes in the Autoclude range use extremely thick wall to enhance durability, the handling of viscous products, as well as improving suction lift ability. All industrial pumps have a minimum 3.2mm wall thickness.

Always consult Autoclude Technical Sales Department for advice on tubing. We can provide a compatibility chart if required.. However, advice can only be provided in a limited format and the performance will always depend upon operating conditions such as temperature, pressure and discharge.

A tube sample test card is available for dip testing to assist the customer in making the final decision when uncertainty exists.

The standard range of Autoclude tube available and carried in stock is as follows.

TUBE LIFE EXPECTANCY

Tube life will be affected by factors such as temperature, back pressure, pump speed and chemical compatibility of tube carrying a pumped medium.

It is important that peristaltic pumps are installed with certain guidelines governing the installation. These suggestions are as follows:

  1. Minimise suction lift.

  2. Minimise back pressure by eliminating unnecessary restrictions in outlet tube, and by keeping the pump discharge head to a minimum.

  3. Always consider larger bore tubing on the discharge side as this will further help the tube life and also reduce the pulsatile effect created by natural action of a peristaltic pump.

  4. Try to keep temperatures low.

  5. High pump speeds reduce tube life. Halve the speed and approximately double the tube life.

  6. Pumps will run dry, but prolonged dry running will reduce tube life inevitably.

  7. Pump tubing will not last forever. Anticipate tube life and establish a maintenance schedule for tube replacement. The whole concept of a peristaltic pump is that the pumped liquid is contained within the tube and this eliminated virtually any damage or wear on the pump parts. A break or split in the tube will cause the pumped medium to possibly contaminate the pump.

TUBE PRESSURE

It is often necessary to pump fluids through restrictions into pressurised pipes or to a height above the pump. The back pressure created affects the performance of a pump by reducing the flow rate and tube life.

Autoclude have developed a range of tubes to help overcome these problems and the following should be considered.

  1. Choose the thickest wall tube available.
  2. Choose the best pressure rated tube material that is chemically compatible with your fluids.
  3. Maximum ideal pressure is 1 bar (14.5 lbs/in²).
  4. Pressures up to 2.5 bar (36 lbs/in²) can be achieved with correctly specified pump.
  5. Contact Autoclude Technical Sales for advice.

OCCLUSION (Squeeze setting)

By stringent control of manufacturing tolerances Autoclude are able to utilise the most cost effective fixed roller system with occlusion factory set and no adjustment necessary.

BASIC RULES TO CONSIDER

  1. Thin wall or medium wall thickness tubes perform excellent service in a variety of applications.
  2. Thick wall tubing has even better suction lift and discharge pressure performance and is ideal for use when pumping viscous liquids to enable the tube to recover original shape quickly.
  3. Silicone and Autoprene should be considered first as they are the most cost effective tubes available.
  4. Largest bore tube and the lowest gearbox speed will give the longest tube life.
